Master’s in Marketing

The people and resources at Whitman have allowed me to further develop real world skills that I will use for the rest of my career.

Cassie Durkin ’23 M.S. knew she wanted to pursue a master’s degree right after finishing her undergraduate education at Hartwick College, where she received a bachelor’s degree in business administration. Unsure of exactly what area of business she wanted to pursue, she looked at a number of universities, but finally decided on Syracuse University’s Whitman School.

“I have always loved Syracuse University, so getting the opportunity to be a student here at the Whitman School was something I could not pass up,” says the Syracuse-area native.

Durkin decided to pursue a graduate degree in marketing at Whitman. She is most impressed with the opportunities that have allowed her to enhance her communications skills and the ability to work effectively in a group.

“One of the differences I’ve noticed in grad school is the need to be extremely accountable and make sure I’m being a good team member who is contributing to the work fully,” says Durkin. “The people and resources at Whitman have allowed me to further develop real world skills that I will use for the rest of my career.”

Presently, Durkin is a marketing intern at VIP Structures in Syracuse. There, she helps manage the company’s social media platforms, facilitates website updates and develops Excel spreadsheet for company contacts in the marketing department.

“Every day is different,” she explains of her responsibilities. “But, helping the employees in the marketing department has allowed me to use the skills I’m gaining through my studies at Whitman and apply them to real world work responsibilities – and that has been invaluable.”

Durkin is also active on campus as the communications representative for Whitman Women in Business (WWiB), something she enjoys for the networking and camaraderie.

While she still has one more year of studies to complete her master’s degree, Durkin intends to pursue a job in a marketing consulting firm after graduation.

“Whitman’s marketing management program has been the perfect fit for me,” she says, “and I’m well on my way to accomplishing all I wanted to get out of earning a master’s degree.”
