Whitman School of Management Reimagines Its Online MBA, Making a Top-Ranked Program More Accessible, Flexible and Relevant Than Ever
The Martin J. Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University is announcing a comprehensive reimagining of its Online MBA program, with significant changes taking effect beginning with the fall 2026 session and continuing into spring 2027. The result is a faster, more flexible path to a Whitman MBA, taught by the same award-winning faculty and delivering the same high-quality education that defines every graduate program at Whitman. The updates reflect the school's commitment to meeting working professionals where they are and delivering a world-class MBA that fits the realities of modern careers.
Already recognized as one of the nation's top online MBA programs, Whitman was ranked No. 11 by The Princeton Review for 2027. The school's full-time MBA also recently broke into the Fortune Top 50 nationally, reflecting the continued strength and momentum of Whitman's MBA portfolio.
A Leaner, More Flexible Program Starting Fall 2026
Beginning this fall, the Online MBA will move from a 54-credit to a 45-credit program, reducing the overall coursework required to earn the degree while maintaining the academic rigor that has made the program nationally recognized. That means approximately three fewer courses, real tuition savings and a faster path to completion. At a moderate pace, students can complete the program in as little as 15 months.
For eligible students, that number could go further. Beginning fall 2026, the program will accept up to six prior learning credits toward the degree, recognizing that meaningful leadership, career and life experience carries real academic value. Military and veteran leadership experience, advanced professional experience and other relevant background may all qualify. Credit eligibility is assessed individually with an academic advisor after enrollment, and eligible students could complete the program in as few as 39 credits.
The program can now also be completed 100% online, from start to finish, from anywhere. In-person residencies are strongly recommended but not required for graduation, giving students full flexibility to earn their degree entirely on their own schedule. For students who want face-to-face connection with faculty, classmates and industry leaders, highly relevant in-person residency weekends remain available on campus, across the United States and internationally, offering valuable opportunities for networking, experiential learning and immersive courses on the trends shaping business today.
A Reimagined Calendar and Student Experience Starting Spring 2027
Beginning with the spring 2027 session, the Online MBA will transition from a quarter-based calendar, with four entry points per year, to a semester-based model offering three cohorts annually: fall, spring and summer. Within each semester, students will have the flexibility to complete coursework in focused eight-week sessions, two per semester for six sessions per year. Alongside the calendar change, the Whitman School is undertaking a comprehensive redevelopment of its online curriculum. Across all 39 courses currently in Whitman's online portfolio, full-time instructors will bring fresh perspectives and updated content that reflects the current and evolving business landscape.
An important differentiator in the online learning space: Whitman never outsources its education and support services. Every course is led by Whitman faculty, and students have access to the same in-house support, executive coaching and career resources available across the school's programs. Students can meet their instructors on campus if they choose to, and the entire experience, from advising to career coaching to classroom instruction, reflects the authentic and highly personalized Whitman experience.
"These changes reflect a core belief at Whitman: that a great MBA should align closely with the needs of the students, including the demands of their career and personal lives," said Whitman Interim Dean Alex McKelvie. "We are making the program faster, more flexible and more relevant without compromising the quality and outcomes our students and employers expect. The personal touches and flexibility remain. This is what it looks like to build a truly modern MBA."
A Program with a Strong Foundation
The Whitman Online MBA has built a strong reputation for preparing working professionals to lead in a rapidly evolving business landscape. The program offers six specializations, including accounting, business analytics, entrepreneurship, finance, marketing management and supply chain management, and is delivered through live online classes in small sections of approximately 20 students. Students benefit from the same faculty who teach on campus, dedicated academic advising, career coaching and access to a network of more than 2,000 Online MBA graduates, 40,000-plus Whitman and hundreds of thousands of Syracuse University alumni worldwide.
Applications for the fall 2026 session are due Aug. 13, 2026. For more information about the Whitman Online MBA and to apply, visit whitman.syracuse.edu/online-masters-programs-programs/mba-online.
