Ian Rennie is part of the Department of Management at the Whitman School of Management faculty as an assistant professor of Law and Public Policy. He teaches courses focused on the evolving nature of the law, the operation of the American legal system, and the impact the law has on our current business environment.

Prior to joining Syracuse University, Rennie focused on his law practice, which primarily focused on trial-stage litigation for 15 years. In addition to his civil practice, he represented defendants in high-profile criminal jury trials involving potential life sentences. Rennie also advocated for clients in appellate matters, including one of the first successful resentencing applications under the Domestic Violence Survivors Justice Act. He continues to practice part-time from his office in downtown Syracuse.

In 2023, Rennie was elected after a contested election to the bench as Judge for the Town of DeWitt, following the 23-year term of the Hon. David Gideon. DeWitt, with a population of just under 30,000 residents, shares the entire Eastern border of the City of Syracuse. Judge Rennie hears thousands of criminal cases and over 100 landlord-tenant disputes per year. He also presides over civil matters and code violations within DeWitt.
In addition to his private practice, from 2016-2022, Rennie served on the board of directors of the Onondaga County Assigned Counsel Program, an agency tasked with providing legal representation for the county’s indigent population. Later, in 2024, he was elected as President of the Onondaga County Magistrate’s Association, an organization charged with the education and development of the over 50 town and village court judges in Onondaga County.

Rennie is also active in various youth sports organizations. He is particularly involved with Eastside Soccer (ESS), a local youth soccer organization. ESS focuses on providing a supportive and encouraging sports environment for hundreds of children each year, regardless of skill or financial status, and has been a pillar of the local youth sports community for over thirty years. Rennie is currently a member of the ESS Board of Directors and acts as the organization's Treasurer. He has coached multiple seasons for both boys’ and girls’ teams, including one season with a winning record.

Rennie earned a J.D. from Syracuse University in 2009 and a B.A. from the University of Georgia in 2006. He is a passionate Georgia Bulldog football fan and is a season ticket holder for the SU basketball and lacrosse teams.
