Residencies

Structured like business conferences, residencies provide hands-on experiences featuring prominent speakers who host relevant discussions and interactive panels. Each three-day, weekend residency offers students the opportunity to meet classmates and professors face-to-face for workshops and networking. Residencies are offered on-campus, in other U.S. cities, and internationally. Online MBA students attend three, in-person residencies throughout the course of their program, and students pursuing other master's degrees at Whitman are welcomed when the topics are relevant to their program.

Featuring multiple concurrent tracks with different themes, residencies are held at the beginning of each term. Content generally falls within four general themes. First, the Business of … series focuses on emerging business trends in a particular industry. In New York City in the Fall of 2022, students examined how the pandemic catalyzed innovation in healthcare. Next, the Whitman Challenge connects students with live consulting projects. For example, in the Fall of 2021, students worked on two projects for the New Orleans area Habitat for Humanity, and one for Excite All-Stars — a local nonprofit that empowers children through leadership experiences and support with academics, the arts, and athletics.

Other residencies have themes that are based on trending topics or dig deeper into topics only briefly covered in regular coursework. Recent examples include Resilient Supply Chains in the Summer of 2021 or Alternative Investments in the Fall of 2022.  The last general residency theme is Skills Building. Popular tracks include Negotiation, which is taught by Syracuse University Chancellor Kent Syverud, Digital Storytelling with Tableau, and Power-Up with Power BI, all of which have been offered multiple times.

“One of the main factors in my decision was the residencies that the online MBA program offers,” he says. “There’s something about sitting down and conversing with your professors and classmates that appealed to me, especially since the rest of the program was online. Whitman really rolled out the red carpet for our visits to campus, and everyone was so welcoming.”
