Amani ya Juu, Fleischer Foundation and Embark

May 20, 2025

Written by Audrey Haselby

We had an incredible day today in Nairobi, Kenya! After an early wake-up, we headed to our first partner, Amani ya Juu. Amani ya Juu is a fair trade sewing and training program that supports marginalized women in Kenya. In Swahili, Amani ya Juu means “peace from above.” During our visit, we received a tour of the facilities and an overview of the production process. We learned that one of Amani ya Juu’s long-term goals is to expand its operations and further promote social welfare throughout the region.

Before the tour, we shared a wonderful breakfast with Maggie, the head of the Nairobi location. She shared her background and the journey that led her to Amani ya Juu, offering us meaningful insight into the leadership behind the organization.

Next, we visited our second partner, The Fleischer Foundation. Founded by Steven Fleischer, this organization aims to provide children in Kenya with enhanced educational and developmental opportunities. While there, we had the opportunity to hear from four of the many students supported by the foundation. Their presentations offered valuable perspectives on Kenyan politics, customs, and more. We then enjoyed a meal together and wrapped up our time with a fun and engaging soccer match. Sports have been a consistent and powerful way for us to connect with our partners in Kenya, as they transcend language and cultural barriers.

Finally, this evening, we’ll meet with our last partner of the day, Embark. Embark focuses on Kenyan cuisine, and we’re excited to learn more about the local service industry while sampling some traditional Kenyan dishes—a perfect way to close out a meaningful and enriching day.
