Being part of both the Whitman and Newhouse communities has been an incredible experience. I highly recommend students pursue dual majors to broaden their perspectives and gain unique insights into different practices and industries.

Born and raised in Buffalo, New York, Margaret Brown '26 (WHIT/NEW) has been excited about attending Syracuse University since taking Syracuse University Project Advance (SUPA) courses in the 10th grade. Engaged in business studies during high school, Brown saw an early connection with the Whitman School because of the attentiveness and care she received during her college search.

As a Renee Crown Honors scholar and SU Global Ambassador, Brown is driven by a passion for higher education. “I knew I wanted to study business because I enjoyed the progressive classes my school offered, like SUPA accounting, presentational speaking, entrepreneurship and more. They encouraged me to expand my creative thinking and sparked the need to find a university that would do the same! What sealed the deal for me was learning that Syracuse offered a dual enrollment program, allowing me to combine my passion for business at Whitman and public relations at the S.I. Newhouse School,” she says.

Brown is honored to be a Syracuse University Success Scholar and Leadership Scholar at Whitman and Newhouse.

“Being part of both the Whitman and Newhouse communities has been an incredible experience. I highly recommend students pursue dual majors to broaden their perspectives and gain unique insights into different practices and industries,” she says.

Brown applauds Whitman for its engaging and experimental course structure. “The first year at Whitman was helpful in deciding which major I wanted to practice. We had the chance to take introductory courses for different majors, really allowing me to get a feel for each and helping me decide to strive for a degree in management,” Brown adds.

“What’s special about Whitman is how many student clubs and organizations there are, which really allows students to connect with each other and their programs,” says Brown, who is currently an assistant program coordinator for Whitman’s Goodman IMPRESSprogram.“In my role, I support my peers in developing the skills and experiences employers seek, such as leadership, communication, certifications, global context and industry exploration.”

“I love it and find the work incredibly fulfilling. Hosting various events is not only fun but also provides countless occasions to meet many amazing students, Whitman staff, alumni and business professionals,” she adds.

Brown is also a member of the Goodman Leaders Academy, where she has had the chance to expand her influence. “I am surrounded by such a talented batch of my Whitman peers. We participate in exclusive opportunities, like last fall’s leadership retreat and training through Dale Carnegie’s program,” says Brown. “What we learn outside the classroom is super valuable, and I consider myself lucky to be included in this program,” she adds.

When asked for her top tip on enhancing and enjoying student life at Whitman, Brown always responds with, “Come to our next event!”
