Global Immersion Experience at Doosan Enerbility, South Korea

May 19, 2025

By Adewumi Adepoju ’26

As part of the 2025 MBA Global Immersion Program at the Whitman School of Management, I had the exceptional opportunity to visit Doosan Enerbility in South Korea. The visit formed a critical part of our academic and cultural exposure during the study abroad experience, offering profound insights into the operations, strategic direction, and transformation journey of a major player in the global energy industry. Doosan Enerbility, formerly known as Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, has evolved significantly since its establishment in 1962. Originally launched as Korea Heavy Industries & Construction Co., Ltd., the company rebranded to reflect its renewed commitment to sustainability, digital innovation, and the global shift toward clean energy solutions.

Headquartered in Changwon, South Korea, Doosan Enerbility specializes in the design, manufacturing, and construction of power generation and water treatment systems. Its impressive portfolio includes nuclear and thermal power plants, desalination facilities, turbines, generators, and key infrastructure components. The company’s presence extends to over 40 countries, solidifying its position as a global leader in the provision of integrated power and water solutions. During our visit, it became clear that Doosan Enerbility’s global footprint and diversified capabilities enable it to address the rising demand for sustainable and secure energy across multiple regions.

One of the key highlights of our visit was learning about Doosan Enerbility’s strategic emphasis on digital transformation. The company has recently signed a memorandum of understanding with KEPCO KDN, focusing on enhancing cybersecurity and developing artificial intelligence applications within the energy sector. This collaboration underscores Doosan’s proactive approach to integrating cutting-edge technologies to drive innovation and resilience in its operations. The signing of this agreement took place at the Bundang Doosan Tower and brought together high-level executives from both companies, reflecting the seriousness with which they are pursuing this strategic direction.

In addition to its digital initiatives, Doosan Enerbility has made substantial progress in the Small Modular Reactor (SMR) market, forming strategic alliances with NuScale Power and other international partners. This move reflects a forward-thinking approach to the future of nuclear energy, aiming to provide scalable, safe, and clean power solutions on a global scale. The company’s recent performance also illustrates its operational strength, with an impressive total order value of 7.131 trillion won reported for the previous fiscal year, alongside a robust order backlog of 15.890 trillion won. These figures not only signal strong demand for Doosan’s capabilities but also provide a solid foundation for sustained future growth.

The visit concluded with a warm and memorable lunch at the Doosan Enerbility Guest House. This cultural exchange provided an excellent opportunity to reflect on the company’s legacy, its ambitions, and the hospitality embedded in Korean corporate culture. It was an enriching experience that not only deepened our understanding of global energy trends but also illustrated the dynamic ways companies like Doosan Enerbility are adapting to the evolving business landscape.

Overall, the visit to Doosan Enerbility was an insightful and intellectually stimulating component of our South Korea immersion. It reinforced the importance of strategic agility, innovation, and global partnerships in today’s energy industry and offered valuable lessons applicable across industries and borders. As an MBA student, witnessing these developments firsthand has significantly broadened my perspective on international business operations and the future of sustainable energy.
