Reflections on My Trip to Singapore

By Laurenne Yomi Mvete

May 20 concluded my four-day trip to Singapore, and it was certainly an awakening experience. Visiting companies and meeting alumni inspired me to pursue my education further. Before the trip, I was questioning the need to pursue my master's degree, but now I see the importance of continuous learning. It's not just about obtaining a degree; it's about the value and exposure that education brings. Lifelong learning enhances our personal and professional growth.

Two things stood out to me in Singapore:

1. Community and Unity: The sense of community in Singapore is remarkable. The country has achieved harmony, unity, and inclusion by working together towards common goals. Singapore's journey to its current status was not easy, marked by many trials and tribulations. However, the collective support, care, and respect among its citizens, who come from various parts of the world, have been crucial in overcoming challenges. The blend of cultures is embraced and celebrated, creating a diverse and harmonious society. Notably, Singapore hosts vibrant cultural such as Chinatown and Little India. The presence of churches and places of worship for every religion, all open to everyone, exemplifies the nation's commitment to religious tolerance and inclusion.

2. Innovation and Sustainability: Singapore is incredibly innovative and forward-thinking. One of the most striking aspects of the city is its commitment to sustainability. Known as a "Garden City," Singapore is filled with greenery, integrating nature into urban spaces. This commitment to a green environment is evident in its extensive parks, vertical gardens, and eco-friendly buildings. The city's efforts in promoting sustainability is vert impressive and set an example for the rest of the world.

During our company visits, I gained a glimpse of the future of the digital world, which reinforced my confidence in the direction I am heading. At Micron, an employee shared insights on the new jobs to invest in, such as content creation and content management—fields I am currently interning in. Additionally, they highlighted the importance of accounting, which reassured me that I am on the right path. Hearing about the promising future of these industries was incredibly motivating and affirmed my commitment to pursuing my career goals.

My trip to Singapore has reinforced my belief in the power of education and community. It has shown me that continuous learning and a strong sense of unity can drive progress and create a harmonious society.
