Kenya Immersion 2024: The Parent Perspective

Today, the team is departing from JFK Airport in New York to fly to Jomo Kenyatta Airport in Nairobi and officially kick off the 2024 Kenya Immersion Trip. Before the team travels, some parents shared their thoughts on what they hope their student will take away from the experience.

Linda Wilkins, Austin Herlihy’s mother:

“I hope that Austin and his team grows and learns in ways that they cannot even comprehend right now but that will become apparent over time after they return. It is truly an honor for them to be able to visit Kenya and work alongside entrepreneurs there, make the most of every minute and interaction — listen, observe, learn, grow."

Carla Pion, Silke Pion’s mother:

“I’m really excited that my daughter has this opportunity to go to Kenya. Seeing new cultures and meeting people from another country helps a person to grow and expand their world. We are a small part of the world and seeing more of it allows for a greater feeling of community so we can work together to make things better and brighter for everyone!”

Kristine A. Schmon, Ethan Schmon’s mother:

“I wanted to share how excited I am for Ethan and his upcoming Immersion Experience trip to Kenya! What a testament to Whitman’s intent to prepare students to be globally-minded, innovative and entrepreneurial leaders! It’s a great opportunity for him in many ways. To experience and explore the region and residents will be a fantastic personal travel experience, but also will serve to further his professional leadership skills development. I expect the immersion will help foster his ability to operate with a big picture mindset and lead with inclusivity in decision making. The real-world experience engaging with businesses of different sizes can contribute to his skills in working flexibly with decision makers and organizational constructs of different sizes and complexities. The trip has all the makings of a transformative learning experience and so happy he has the opportunity to apply the classroom discussion in real-life.”
