Creativity and a Global Mindset

By Silke Pion and Ethan Schmon

For our final day in Nairobi, we began at a beautiful garden restaurant, Cultiva Kenya. The fresh food, mostly grown onsite, highlights the growing number of organic restaurants in the city. We were excited to welcome our guest, Tasha Straker, who shared about the journey to creating her nonprofit, GiveAScrap. Her philosophy with this organization is to connect food, pottery, and the environment in a cohesive way. Her story was nothing short of inspirational and a lovely way to begin wrapping up the trip.

Following this, we met with Kenyan artist Michael Soi. Speaking with Soi allowed tremendous insight into documentation of social topics and challenging industries through creative expression. Soi spoke to us about his creative process, information gathering, global appeal, creative entrepreneurship, and greater personal growth. Creativity drives innovation, which makes Soi’s perspective and success even more important. A critical takeaway from this interaction was the importance of keeping an impartial and judgment-free perspective, especially when considering markets and challenging social topics.

Our time in Kenya has been an incredibly impactful learning experience, allowing everyone involved to cultivate powerful entrepreneurial and business skills as well as a global mindset. Thank you to Professor Wimer, our partners, and the Martin J. Whitman School of Management for making this experience possible!
