Cross-Continental Friendships: Making Bracelets for Friends Around the Globe

On Friday, April 5, the 2024 Whitman Kenya Immersion Trip team officially kicked off its first event in preparation for our travels next month. Despite being across the world, our team found connections to our Kenyan partner organizations right in the Syracuse community.

Worldwide Pen Pals

Christian Brothers Academy, a local secondary school, has a twin institution located in Nakuru, Kenya called the Child Discovery Centre. Students from the CDC and CBA have connected by becoming pen pals, where they have exchanged letters with each other over the past two years. During our visit Friday, the team was able to meet with some of CBA’s students and made friendship bracelets for their pen pals in Nakuru. When we visit in May, our team will bring the bracelets to the CDC students.

Continental Connections

The CBA students gave us a tour of their campus and shared details about their school community. A primary aspect which stood out was CBA’s roots as a Lasallian institution, which means the school was founded upon the principles of making positive impacts within one’s community. The CDC echoes these same principles by assisting students with tuition costs for local schools.

After hearing from different students and faculty throughout the day, it was evident that the CBA community greatly cared about the relationships established with their friends at the CDC. Students expressed their joy of reading a letter from their pen pal and the excitement they have to write back with updates.

Our team’s visit on Friday was filled with curiosity, warmth and learning. It’s hard to believe that in just over a month we’ll be on the other side of the world talking to CDC students about their pen pals in Syracuse. I’m looking forward to getting to meet with students in Nakuru and hear their stories!
