Experiencing Nairobi and the Kenyan Church

May 18, 2025

By Sophia Durso and Jody Donelan

On Day 6, the team started the morning experiencing Nairobi through the eyes of a native Kenyan. We were delighted to be invited by Mama Irene, the manager of Home Care Retreat, and her son, Ian, to join them at their local church. We ventured to CITAM, and we were able to see him perform beautiful hymns with the worship team. We were immediately accepted into the church and asked to introduce ourselves to build connections with the other university students there. The main message shared was focused on forgiveness and kindness to those who surround you, stating that “you are a candidate of treating people the way you have been treated.” Later in the sermon, we were able to mix with other students and speak about their areas of study as well as our own. Connecting with the attendees of the youth church gave the team insight into the meaning of community found within it.

Our next stop was Langata Link, which is a small shopping center featuring many of our local retail partners. Afterwards, we made our way to Ololo Lodge, a small family-run lodge, centered in the middle of Nairobi National Park. On the way, we had the pleasure of seeing lions, rhinos, giraffes, and more in their natural yet protected habitats. Ololo lodge focuses on full sustainability efforts from fertilizer to final meals. At Ololo, the team was able to enjoy a fantastic meal featuring various dishes, however, the homemade vanilla mint ice cream was a favorite. Every meal served at Ololo is truly farm-to-table with ingredients grown and made on the ground, which we learned on our tour of the farm after our meal. It was amazing to see the efforts and care that Ololo puts into their food, highlighting the strong Kenyan focus on sustainability.

To end the day, the team went to Jump Nairobi for some team bonding. The team was able to participate in multiple activities. This included zip lining across the mall courtyard with pond, leap of faith where the team could jump off a tall tower to the ground, a giant swing where 3 team members were dropped
