Jet Lagged but Joyful: Our First Day in Kenya

May 12, 2026

Jambo! On Tuesday, May 12, all 13 of us met bright and early at John F. Kennedy Airport, struggling to haul all of the luggage full of donations we were bringing. Before we knew it, it was time to board the long and dreaded fourteen hour flight to Nairobi. Some of us slept, some made new friends in their row, and others walked around aimlessly in circles, but eventually, we were all packed like sardines in the minivan, ready for all of the adventures ahead of us.

Once we were all packed away in the van with Rasheed, we set out for Anchor Leather & Crafts, a brand focused on handmade, sustainable goods, where we were greeted with dancing, singing, and friendly faces all around. After a dance lesson and some introductions, we enjoyed delicious local food and spent some time shopping around all of their beautiful pieces. When the shopping concluded, the work began! We were split into three groups to learn a few basics in leather making, jewelry and pottery. Getting to learn from the artisans themselves was truly an insightful experience.

Finally, our goodbyes were said to our gracious hosts at Anchor Leather & Crafts, and we set out for our final stop of the day, Naivas, one of the largest supermarket chains in Kenya, to stock up on some snacks for the trip. Finally, our tired group arrived to a warm welcome from Rachael, our host at Home Care Nairobi for the duration of our stay. We were welcomed with open arms and enjoyed a nice meal to close out our day.

Day one was long and exhausting, but a strong start to our journey in Kenya and we can’t wait to see what the rest brings!
