Kenya and Unilever

I'm excited to share my perspective having had the immense opportunity to join the Kenya Cultural Immersion trip as both a Whitman alum as well as a business partner representing Unilever. Just like the Kenyan culture of warm welcomes and building a sense of community, I'm fortunate how welcoming the students have been to me from Day 1. They have welcomed me with open arms and I have learned so much from all of them and truly value the couple of days together. 

 

Only having the opportunity to participate for the first three days of the trip —it's been eye opening to witness and participate firsthand the impact the students are having and how immersive of a program this truly is. One of my highlights during my time at Whitman was the immersive and experiential learning trips I was fortunate to go on. Participating in this trip reminds me of the impact and opportunity students have outside of the classroom and I am so thankful for Professor Wimer for leading this trip.

 

Today on our 3rd day of the trip, we had the opportunity to spend the afternoon with the local division of my employer, Unilever Kenya Ltd. This was by far my highlight of the last 3 days of the trip as it brought me so much joy showcasing how Unilever is managing and doing business in a global setting —bringing the course to life outside of the classroom. The students were able to see how Unilever is operating in a global market, tour the factories and see world-class manufacturing facilities and finally how Unilever is building local brands and products for the consumer needs of the Kenyan market.

 

I look forward to seeing Unilever continue to be a partner of the Kenya Cultural Immersion trip, including bringing more collaborative partners together such as one of our key suppliers of Unilever, Mr. Green Africa.
