BUA 474 Student Spotlight: Isabella Keel

Hi there! I'm Isabella Keel, reaching out from Syracuse University's campus in London. I'm a junior from Los Angeles, and a marketing major at Whitman, with a data analytics minor in the iSchool. I'd like to share how one specific class, Project Learning in Business (course code: BUA 474), is significantly contributing to both my academic and career goals.

I jumped at the chance to take this course during my semester abroad because BUA 474 offers the unique advantage of counting towards my Whitman major. Unlike other courses taken abroad that fulfill arts and science elective credits, BUA 474 satisfies a major requirement that I would otherwise have needed to complete on home campus.

The structure of the class involves a mix of brief lectures, off-site trips and primarily a project where we get to tackle a real-world business problem with a company based in London. My professor has invested significant time making sure everyone's assigned project aligns with their major and will be relevant to their future careers. As an example, my group has been tasked with assisting a family-owned bakery. Our objective is to help leadership gain a better understanding of who their customer is. Throughout the remainder of the semester, we’ll continue working as a team to address this challenge and report our findings in a formal presentation to leadership.

I would most definitely recommend this class to every Whitman student! This course is allowing me to learn in a unique way with hands-on experience and is truly enhancing my study abroad experience. Through BUA 474, I'm gaining the tools necessary to understand London from many different perspectives. It has quickly become one of my favorite courses, and I’m excited to continue learning throughout the rest of the semester.
