WhitmanWorks!

By: The 2024 Whitman London Core

Last week, our SOM 354 class had the incredible opportunity to visit the Paddington WeWork facilities, and let me tell you, it was nothing short of inspiring! WeWork, for those who might not know, is a company that provides shared workspaces for freelancers, startups and large enterprises. Their mission is all about fostering collaboration and creativity, and boy, do they deliver!

Now, you might have heard about WeWork's rollercoaster journey in the news lately. After their 2019 collapse, founder Adam Neumann is on a mission to buy back the business. Despite the bumps in the road, stepping into their vibrant offices, you can't help but see the appeal. The energy is infectious, and having our “Managing in a Global Setting” class in one of their spaces gave us a taste of the innovative culture they're known for.

During our visit, we had the privilege of meeting with Ben Samuels, WeWork’s chief revenue officer. His insights into managing an international company, especially post-bankruptcy, were relevant and informative. It's clear that WeWork is not just bouncing back but also expanding its locations, and meeting with someone at the forefront of this revitalization was super neat. Better yet, our adventure couldn't have come at a more perfect time. Apple TV's recent launch of their short series "We Crashed", starring Jared Leto and Anne Hathaway, allowed us to gain even deeper insights into WeWork's interesting journey. This show was not only entertaining but also educated us about the company's unique past and promising future in the shared space and real estate sphere. It's reassuring to see WeWork embracing transparency, and Ben shared with us how this show has had a positive outcome, undoubtedly helping clarify their narrative, easing any doubts and reinforcing excitement for what's to come.

Much like WeWork, Whitman students thrive in an environment that fosters teamwork and innovative thinking. As we get ready for our return to campus, we can’t wait to carry with us that powerful energy!
