BUA474 and a Visit to the Museum of Brands

By Sadie Potyk

I have always known that I wanted to study abroad, but I was initially concerned about how my Whitman credits would transfer and whether I would still be able to engage in meaningful business-related work. However, when I learned about the BUA project-based learning class, I was immediately drawn to the opportunity.

This class offers hands-on experience, allowing us to go on field trips and gain deeper insights into the business world. London, as one of the world's leading business hubs, provides a dynamic and diverse environment for professionals and companies alike.

A key component of the course is the opportunity to work directly with a company, whether a nonprofit organization or a struggling business, to support them in specific ways. My group has been paired with Soldiers Arts Academy, where we are responsible for enhancing their social media presence and increasing brand awareness. Given that our team has strong backgrounds in graphic design and social media, this project aligns perfectly with our skills and interests. I appreciate that this course prioritizes both professional development and real-world impact—allowing us to build valuable experience for our resumes while actively helping a business in need.

One of the highlights of the program so far was our visit to The Museum of Brands last week. This immersive experience provided a fascinating look into how branding, packaging, and materials have evolved across different time periods. We had the opportunity to hear from a museum employee who shared his expertise on various brands, and we were even able to handle vintage packaging and tins from the 1950s. The museum itself is designed as a maze, guiding visitors through the decades and showcasing the evolution of consumer goods such as food packaging, toys, movies, radios, and televisions. It was an eye-opening experience that I highly recommend.

Looking ahead, next week we will present progress updates on our individual projects to the class. Additionally, we will embark on a field study at Wimbledon, where we will gain deeper insights into its business operations and commercial impact.
