Visit to the Royal Opera House

By Samantha Alaraj

Hello everyone! I’m Samantha Alaraj, and I’m currently enrolled in BUA 474. If you haven’t been keeping up with my other adventures in this course, go check them out!

This week, BUA 474 had the amazing opportunity to visit the Royal Opera House. We were guided through a fascinating tour where we got to learn all about the production process behind this world-renowned venue.

We were lucky enough to be led by an amazing tour guide who walked us through the Opera House’s fascinating history and how it evolved into the world-class institution it is today. We learned about the different revenue streams that support the organization, which productions are the most profitable, and how funding plays a role in bringing art to life.

One of the most exciting parts of the tour was getting to see the ballerinas in rehearsal — a moment that truly felt magical. We also explored the stages, peeked into the costume department, visited the prop and set design rooms, and even toured the studio where the props are made by hand. Seeing the craftsmanship and detail that goes into every production was eye-opening and inspiring.

This visit was definitely one of my favorite field trips so far. It allowed me to witness the inner workings of a globally respected performance venue and gave me a whole new appreciation for the behind the scenes effort that goes into each show. Being able to experience this firsthand was such a valuable and memorable part of my time abroad.
