Wimbledon Behind the Scenes!

By Samantha Alaraj

Greetings from London!

My name is Samantha Alaraj, and I’m currently enrolled in Whitman’s BUA 474 project course. I’m a junior from San Francisco, majoring in marketing management and retail management.

Today, our class had the amazing opportunity to visit Wimbledon and get a behind-the-scenes look at the business side of one of the world’s most prestigious tennis tournaments. For those who don’t know, Wimbledon is one of the four Grand Slam tournaments and a huge part of professional tennis history.

We kicked off the day with a tour of the grounds, making our way to Centre Court, the Wimbledon Museum, and even restricted areas like the broadcasting deck. It was really cool to learn about the facilities, including how they keep the grass courts in top condition year-round. One of the highlights was seeing the Men’s Singles Trophy up close.

After the tour, we had lunch and then a discussion about Wimbledon’s history, its strong emphasis on professionalism, and how it operates year-round for a tournament that only lasts two weeks. It was fascinating to hear about the hiring process, revenue streams, and everything that goes into making Wimbledon run smoothly.

This trip was such a great way to learn about business outside the classroom. It was eye-opening to see how much strategy, planning and behind-the-scenes work goes into making Wimbledon a global success.
