From the Chair

I have a lot of news to share with you. First, we have made some important personnel changes in the department. I am going to work in the dean’s office as associate dean for faculty affairs and am stepping down as department chair.

Accounting Professor Creates New Course on ESG Reporting to Prepare Students for Emerging Career Opportunities

This fall, students at the Whitman School will have the opportunity to explore their interest in environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues and how they apply to the field of accounting. A new course, ESG Reporting, created by Assistant Professor of Accounting Sebastian Tideman-Frappart, stems from one of his primary areas of research, as well as his interest in preparing students for a much sought-after skill set that has recently emerged in professional accounting.

Accounting Career Exploration Trip to NYC Gives Students In-Person Perspective, Opportunity to Interact with Dozens of Whitman Alumni

Whitman’s annual Accounting Career Exploration Trip took place in May, as 23 rising sophomores and juniors met Emily Shaughnessy, an assistant director for the Whitman Career Center; Olivia Smith, undergraduate career advisor; and Professor of Accounting Practice Maryann Monforte, in New York City for a four-day excursion to visit a number of accounting firms, including the Big 4. They also had the chance to interact with Whitman alumni working in the field in more informal settings, while also enjoying some of the highlights of the city.

From Crossroads in Europe to Digital Assurance and Transparency (DAT) at PricewaterCoopers (PwC)

When she returned from Italy for the summer, she interned at PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in their New York City office working for the Digital Assurance and Transparency (DAT) practice doing IT audits. She says, “I really enjoyed the culture and work I did at PwC, so I have accepted a full-time offer for summer 2024. Post-grad I will be taking my CPA license exams, as well as working at PwC.”

An Ambitious Accountant with Global Experience 

Jenna Zamkov '25 is making significant strides in her academic and professional journey as an accounting major at the Whitman School of Management. With a strong academic record, boasting a 3.7 GPA, Zamkov has leveraged her time at Syracuse University to explore her passion for accounting and gain valuable hands-on experience.

Alumnus Sets the Tone for Accounting Career in the Business of Music

Matthew Palermo ’12 (WSM/NEW), ’13 M.S., credits his parents for introducing him to a lot of music while growing up in Syracuse, New York, and he has always had a passion for playing various instruments and songwriting. He even recorded a few demos as a student at Syracuse University, while studying accounting at Whitman and public relations at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.

Impact Donor Profile EY’s Michael Cyran Builds Relationships, Supports Accounting Students’ Success

Michael Cyran, a partner at EY, is not a Syracuse University graduate, but the relationships he’s built with faculty, staff and students at the Whitman School over the past 16 years have made each visit to campus feel a bit like coming home. His strong relationship with the Whitman School has resulted in outstanding contributions of time, experience and money, which continue to positively impact Whitman’s Joseph I. Lubin School of Accounting.

Joe Comprix and Willie Reddic named Associate Deans at Whitman

The Whitman School of Management announced the appointment of two new Associate Deans, effective February 1, 2024. Professor Joe Comprix has been named Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Professor Willie Reddic has been named Associate Dean for Business Education.

Do Multinational Corporations Engage in Transfer Pricing to Shift Income to Tax Havens?

In 2001, Enron made its mark on history as the largest bankruptcy in the United States to date — the result of fraudulent accounting practices. To this day, the American government loses large sums of potential tax income every year to corporations that maneuver to hide profits from taxation. Professor of Accounting David Harris and colleagues address this timely real-world problem in a paper recently published in the Journal of International Accounting Research.
