Personalized Coaching

The Whitman Career Center offers a variety of workshops to help students prepare for a competitive business career search.  Workshop dates, times and locations will be promoted through the Whitman intranet called MyWhitman.

Personal Career Coaching

We understand that the career search process can be daunting, but we are here to help. A personal coaching session will allow you to meet with a Career Center professional to discuss career choices and how your experiences will fit, what you should say in an interview or how you can connect with Syracuse University alumni. You can make an appointment through Handshake at any time that fits your busy schedule.

Some guidelines to help you make the most of your appointment:

  • Make an agenda before meeting with your counselor, so your thoughts are clear.
  • Bring a copy of your resume to share with your counselor. This will give him or her a good idea of your skills and abilities.

Practice Interviews

The Whitman Career Center professionals will perform practice interviews to help you prepare for competitive job interviews. A practice interview session, like a personal coaching session, is a 30-minute appointment with a career professional.

To schedule a practice interview, log in to Handshake and request an appointment.

Practice interviews are also available through Big Interview. On Big Interview, you will also find additional materials to help you prepare.

Hiring Timeline

Don’t miss out! Most career opportunities are recruited sooner than you think. Below is a general timeline for the various processes. Please note that opportunities are available at other times, but most fall under this timing.

Full-Time Opportunities

As soon as the fall semester begins, the full-time hiring process is underway. Be sure to return to campus with your resume and cover letter polished and your list of target companies in hand. Companies will often host "Welcome Back" events as soon as the semester starts. In mid-to-late September, career workshops are available to help you prepare for Career Fair Week, held in late September/early October, and on-campus interviews in October. Most full-time deadlines are within the first two months of school, so be sure you are on top of your game and ready to impress. Full-time offers are generally extended by the end of the fall semester after second-round interviews have been conducted off-campus at corporate offices.

Internships

Just as full-time hiring gets underway as soon as the fall semester begins, so does internship hiring. However, internship and full-time recruiting do continue into the spring semester.
