Whitman Externship Experiences

The Whitman School believes externships are a vital component of the learning experience.  Whitman students are encouraged to seek out experiences that will enhance their knowledge of career paths. Externships also allow corporate partners to fill hiring pipelines as the landscape becomes more competitive proactively.

Why offer externships?

An externship is a valuable three to 10-day immersion experience that allows companies to get to know top Whitman talent who may be a good long-term fit for an organization.

While the experience allows a student to rotate through different business functions and challenges to gain a better grasp of the day-to-day responsibilities required within a particular firm, participating firms gain a fresh perspective on department operations, as well as have the chance to gauge whether a student is a fit for a future internship and/or full-time hire.

Companies that participate in Whitman’s externship program can offer students full internships for the following year, effectively removing the talent off the market from competitors.

Externship Policies

Externships are recommended to be conducted during the student’s sophomore year.

Corporate partners are responsible for building a rotational experience that meets learning outcomes.  However, no two companies are the same. Our team is happy to collaborate with you to develop a program that works best for your organization.

Appropriate authorizations for access to the work site are the firm's responsibility, and students must be notified in advance.

Learning Outcomes

Anticipated learning outcomes for students include:

  • Enhanced understanding of career options within a specific industry
  • Greater view of skills required to perform well within a specific career
  • Better understanding of the services or products delivered within a specific industry
  • Relationship building with executives in the chosen organization

The Whitman School can offer and organize venues in advance of the externship for networking receptions and interviews to assist with selecting potential candidates.
