Orientation and First Company Visit (SIMTech)

By Alabi Tosin MBA Class of 2025

Our day kicked off at 9:30 am with a gathering in the hotel lobby. Dressed in our smart casual or business casual attire, the excitement was palpable. We were all set for a day packed with learning and new experiences, starting with our first destination: Singapore Management University (SMU).

The orientation at SMU was a highlight of the morning. This wasn't just a routine briefing; it was an interactive and engaging session that taught us invaluable safety protocols for both Malaysia and Singapore. We delved into various cultural norms, including an interesting tidbit about dining etiquette: finding napkins on tables means the table is reserved. Who knew that reserving a table could be as simple as a well-placed napkin?

The session was thorough, covering essential safety rules that ensured we were well-prepared for our stay. We also explored different cultural ethics, enhancing our understanding of the local customs. The interactive nature of the session kept us all engaged, with lively discussions about the delicacies we had already sampled and those we were eager to try. This exchange of culinary experiences added a delightful personal touch to the orientation.

After the session, we had some free time for lunch. This break was the perfect opportunity to independently explore the vibrant food scene of Singapore. Whether we chose nearby food stalls or quaint cafes, it was a chance to indulge in the rich and diverse flavors of the local cuisine.

Reunited at the hotel lobby at 2:35 p.m., this time in business casual attire, we prepared for our afternoon excursion. Our destination was the Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech), part of the A*STAR group. Arriving at SIMTech, we embarked on an insightful tour of this cutting-edge facility. The visit offered a deep dive into Industry 5.0 and supply chain innovations. Donning safety goggles, we navigated the hallways and factory areas, observing firsthand the technologies shaping the future of manufacturing. For business school students like us, it was an eye-opening experience, bridging the gap between our classroom knowledge and real-world applications.

Amidst our formal activities, we found a moment to relax and enjoy some local delicacies. By taking off our coats, we briefly transitioned to a more casual vibe, savoring the delightful flavors of Singaporean snacks. This mix of business and pleasure added a refreshing touch to our afternoon. As the day transitioned to evening, we had the freedom to embark on various group adventures. Some of us indulged in shopping, uncovering unique items and souvenirs. Others continued their culinary explorations, trying new dishes from hawker centers to chic restaurants. And, of course, there were those of us who couldn't resist capturing every moment, acting like obsessive paparazzi with our phones. To keep our devices charged, power banks became our constant companions. This way, we could document every memorable moment without interruption.

As the sun set, we reflected on the diverse experiences that had enriched our day in Singapore. From learning about health and safety to exploring technological innovations and savoring local delicacies, each moment was filled with discovery and growth. This blend of education, culture, and fun not only broadened our horizons but also brought us closer as a group, creating memories that we will cherish for a lifetime. We concluded our day with a sense of fulfillment, eagerly anticipating the adventures the next day would bring. And let’s face it, if a napkin can save a table, who knows what else we’ll discover tomorrow?
