Inside Shinsegae: The World’s Largest Department Store and a Spa Experience Like No Other

By Carlton Landingham II ’26

Our visit to the Shinsegae Department Store and Shopping Mall in Busan was a day to
remember. Not only is Shinsegae the largest department store in the world, but it also embodies
a perfect blend of retail innovation, local economic power, and luxurious relaxation, all under
one massive roof. To walk through the world’s biggest department store is a surreal experience.
At times, it honestly felt overwhelming, each floor a sprawling maze of high-end boutiques,
designer brands, and specialty shops. Even though I didn’t personally shop, just wandering
through the elegant displays and observing the variety of goods was fascinating in itself.

After exploring the store, we had the pleasure of attending a company presentation led by a
Shinsegae staff member. The speaker was not only incredibly informative but also genuinely
hilarious. At one point, I was laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes. You could tell he loved
what he did, and that passion made the presentation all the more engaging.

One of the keys to Shinsegae’s continued success is its innovative marketing strategies. Rather
than relying solely on permanent stores, they bring in pop-up experiences tied to trending
media, like a “Squid Game” store when Season 2 dropped. These limited-time shops, about 10
to 15 per year, generate huge foot traffic and keep the shopping experience fresh and exciting. I
also found it fascinating that sales VIPs account for 35% of total sales. That means a small,
ultra-wealthy segment of customers contributes to over a third of Shinsegae’s revenue. It
speaks volumes about their clientele and the premium experiences the store provides.

To wrap up the visit, we headed to Spaland, a luxurious spa inside Shinsegae. This wasn’t just a
bonus, it was one of the most serene and restorative experiences I’ve had on the trip. From
foot-soaking pools and peaceful saunas to an out-of-this-world massage chair experience,
Spaland was designed to help you fully unwind. My favorite part? Without question, the heated
full-body massage chair. It worked on my arms, legs, back, and even my glutes, and while I
don’t usually have back problems, I walked out feeling like I had a brand-new spine. I only wish
we had more time there, because I could’ve easily stayed in that chair for hours.

My visit to Shinsegae wasn’t just about luxury or laughter, it was about witnessing the power of
reinvention, strategic thinking, and cultural relevance. Shinsegae has transformed from a local
department store into a global symbol of premium retail and innovation. Their ability to blend
entertainment, retail, and wellness into one experience shows how the future of shopping isn’t
just about buying, it’s about immersing. In a world where digital retail dominates, Shinsegae
proves that in-person experiences still matter. Whether it’s through smart branding, economic
impact, or just giving people a peaceful moment in a spa, they’re setting the standard for what a
department store can be.
